Driven by Passion, Not Profit

Urban air mobility ( UAM) integration is set to decongest traffic from our cities and streamline cargo ferrying services in and out of a metropolis. Urban air mobility is not dependent on technology alone but integrates several developmental pillars to guarantee its success. Urban airspace mobility provides a framework for adapting our transport system to the concept of smart cities. It goes beyond the limits of ground transport and provides a safer, cleaner, and faster way to transport goods and people.

The success of urban air space integration concepts depends on three pillars:

  • Air mobility vehicle technology
  • UAM infrastructure
  • Finance and operation

Air mobility vehicle technology

Unmanned aerial systems will replace our flight control towers. The introduction of electrical vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) will decongest roads in high-traffic cities. Also, eVTOL crafts have a quieter, safer, and more reliable engine compared to conventional airplanes.

Technology companies have presented three designs for air mobility vehicles. The first concept is the tilt-thrust aircraft that tilt the wings downwards for vertical mobility and cruising. The second concept is ‘Lift and cruise’ aircraft that have independent downward-facing wings for vertical lift-off. The third eVTOL concept does away with conventional airplane wings. It employs multiple rotors fixed around the plane that can tilt in any direction. The multirotor aircraft can lift-off, cruise, or tilt at different angles when airborne.

Air mobility vehicles will replace conventional helicopters because they are lighter, faster, and quieter. Also, eVTOL aircraft are electric-powered, which is cleaner and renewable energy compared to jet fuel.

UAM infrastructure

Air mobility vehicles will be effective if we have the infrastructure to support them. One way of keeping airspace integration concepts viable is the erection of vertiports on city buildings. It will ease congestion in cities and provide a safe and faster way to board or alight from air mobility vehicles.

City planners should design vertiports in close alignment to eVTOL aircraft design concepts. The vertiports should provide enough room for landing, lift-off, tilting, or hovering of the air mobility vehicle before lift-off. Also, there will be a need to set up vertiport charging stations, a concept already embraced with electric cars.

Finance and operation

It is necessary to develop a revenue model that will finance our urban air mobility airspace integration concepts. Also, national and municipal governments will have to plan an air mobility integration concept viable enough to attract investor funding. We also have to think about the sustenance of the infrastructure we implement and the demand for airspace mobility travel. City planners have to plan convenient city travel routes and set up revenue collection points within the travel routes. Revenue to finance the infrastructure will also come from licenses and permits issued to individuals and companies operating private air mobility crafts within the cities.

We are certified UAM  planners

Are you looking for experts to help plan your city’s UAM concepts? We are a team of industry-leading innovators with competitive ideas for planning smart cities. Unlike our competitors, we design our UAM and eVTOL aircraft concepts from scratch and customize them to our client’s liking. Our in-house UAM mobility planners will also advise you on the various ways to plan and sustain a smart city’s infrastructure.
